Even fantasy and horror elements started creeping into the storylines, and Captain America Comics somehow kicked and scratched it’s way into Mid-1949, when the plug was finally pulled. Steve and Bucky were not in the army anymore, were mostly at home in the U.S.A., and were fighting assorted gangsters, early communist-threat-types, femme fatales and the like. Making a strong showing in sales figures, especially through the war in Europe and the Pacific, in 1946 Timely didn’t really know what to do with the character.
CAPTAIN AMERICA SUPERHERO CREATOR 2.0 SERIES
A very young Stan Lee would edit the book and often contribute scripts to the series (sometimes uncredited). The team wrote and drew the book for the first 10 issues - classics, all of them - and were lured away from Timely by National/DC, who, let’s face it, had more financial resources to pay them well for their work than the more grass-roots, modest Timely.īut Captain America Comics endured as a popular best-seller, now in the hands of the very capable Al Avison, Al Gabriele, Syd Shores and, later, Don Rico. This made Simon and Kirby very hot property in the comics industry. Timely and Joe Simon and Jack Kirby had an out of the box hit on their hands, and Captain America Comics flew off the shelves. The best way to get the newly dubbed and costumed ”Captain America” into the mix was to enlist him as an army private so he could be on the front-line and “become” Captain America when the situation dictated.Īs news of Captain America’s successful breaking up of Nazi plots spreads quickly in the press and among the American fighting forces, Steve Rogers screws up and accidentally allows himself to be discovered in the middle of changing into his Captain America guise by Bucky Barnes, the teenage camp “mascot.” Seeing no other solution, Steve takes Bucky under his wing, meticulously trains him in the art of combat and tactics, and makes him Captain America’s fighting partner (he gets a costume, too, as well as a mask, but, oddly, retains his real name). Government to carry out some of the hardest missions in their anti-war efforts (America was not even in the war yet, as Pearl Harbor was months away - but the writing was on the wall despite the loud protestations of Charles Lindbergh and other isolationists). So what have we got? Well, we have Steve Rogers, who is at least one super soldier and is immediately tapped by the U.S. The problem is, Reinstein never wrote down the formula - being paranoid that it could fall into the wrong hands - and the secret of the Super Soldier Serum died with him… Just then, Nazi fifth-column spies who have infiltrated America break into the laboratory and shoot Professor Reinstein, resulting in his death. Rogers gets chosen first for the program and is injected with the “Super Soldier Serum,” and immediately undergoes a dramatic transformation into a super strong, muscular man. Steve Rogers, wanting to contribute in any way to the war effort, is rejected as 4-F at the army recruiting station because he is too skinny and sickly, decides to volunteer for a secret government program which aims to create “super soldiers” using a newly developed serum created by Professor Reinstein - a scientist we are to assume fled from Germany during the rise of the Nazi party. The brainchild of Timely staffers Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Captain America would soon blow away all other defenders-of-the-flag and take his place in history as one of the most iconic and recognizable figures in the Superhero Universe!

There had already been other “patriotic” heroes introduced by other companies, and, with Hitler advancing in Europe, sentiment for America to get into the fight ran high in certain quarters. But in March of 1941, comicdom had never seen the overt boldness as the image on the cover of Captain America Comics #1 - here was the most patriotic superhero of all actually punching Hitler in the face!

Lead characters The Human Torch, The Sub-Mariner, and the Angel became popular with readers since the word “go.” But the best was yet to come… Timely Comics, that would become Marvel Comics, was firmly established as one of the best comic book publishers since the debut of Marvel (Mystery) Comics #1 in October of 1939.
